Cervicogenic Headache

Headaches happen for lots of reasons. It can be hard to know what kind you have and what’s causing it. But if it’s related to a problem in your neck, there’s a good chance it’s a cervicogenic headache.

Joint Pain

Joints form the connections between bones. They provide support and help you move. Any damage to the joints from disease or injury can interfere with your movement and cause a lot of pain.

Chronic pain

Chronic pain can be caused by many different factors. Often conditions that accompany normal aging may affect bones and joints in ways that cause chronic pain. Other common causes are nerve damage and injuries that fail to heal properly. Some kinds of chronic pain have numerous causes. Back pain, for example, may be caused by a single factor, or any combination of these factors:

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia diagram

Fibromyalgia is the second most common condition affecting your bones and muscles. Yet it’s often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Its classic symptoms are widespread muscle and joint pain and fatigue. There’s no cure. But a combination of medication, exercise, managing your stress, and healthy habits may ease your symptoms enough that you can live a normal, active life.

Herniated Disc

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc occurs when the spongy, soft material that cushions the bones of the spine (vertebrae) slips out of place or becomes damaged. You can have a herniated disc in any part of your spine. When a herniated disc presses on a nerve, it can cause pain, numbness, and weakness in the area of the body where the nerve travels. Follow the links below to find WebMD’s comprehensive coverage about herniated discs, what a herniated disc looks like, how to treat it, and much more.

Pinched Nerve

pinched nerve

The term “pinched nerve” describes one type of damage or injury to a nerve or set of nerves. The injury may result from compression, constriction, or stretching. Symptoms include numbness, “pins and needles” or burning sensations, and pain radiating outward from the injured area. One of the most common examples of a single compressed nerve is the feeling of having a foot or hand “fall asleep.” Pinched nerves can sometimes lead to other conditions such as peripheral neuropathy.

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis

Spondylolisthesis is a back problem in which a bone (vertebra) in the lower spine slips out of place and onto the next spinal bone. If the vertebra puts pressure on a nearby nerve, it can cause low back pain. Spondylolisthesis is the most common cause of back pain in teenagers. The condition may be present from birth, or it may result from injuries or activities that put a lot of stress on the lower back — for example, gymnastics and weight lifting. Follow the links below to find WebMD’s comprehensive coverage about how spondylolisthesis develops, what it looks like, how to treat it, and much more.

Tendonitis

Tendonitis

Tailbone pain — pain that occurs in or around the bony structure at the bottom of the spine (coccyx) — can be caused by trauma to the coccyx during a fall, prolonged sitting on a hard or narrow surface, degenerative joint changes, or vaginal childbirth.Tailbone pain can feel dull and achy but typically becomes sharp during certain activities, such as sitting, rising from a seated to a standing position or prolonged standing. Defecation and sex also might become painful. For women, tailbone pain can make menstruation uncomfortable as well.

Nerve Pain

Nerve pain can be a symptom of many different conditions, and is caused when the brain receives a pain signal where there is no immediate cause. Symptoms include burning, tingling, numbness and loss of reflexes. Usually, nerve pain results from damage from a physical injury or diseases like cancer, diabetes or HIV. Often, treatment of the latter conditions causes the nerve pain. Diagnosis is made in some cases by CT scans, MRIs and skin biopsies. Treatment will vary from over-the-counter topical treatments to anticonvulsants and antidepressants to painkillers to electrical stimulation. Follow the links below to find WebMD’s comprehensive coverage about nerve pain, its causes, how it is diagnosed, treated, and much more.

Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain

Secondary only to the common cold, back pain is one of the top reasons people visit their doctor. At Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center, we take a comprehensive approach toward back pain, which may include minimally invasive procedures, medication, and alternative therapies like physical therapy or occupational therapy.

The goal of back pain treatment is to help you return to your normal daily activities. Many patients find that the minimally invasive procedures at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center eliminated the need for traditional back surgery and many are able to reduce or eliminate their need for pain medications.

Acute and Chronic Neck Pain

Neck pain can be caused by a variety of factors, but the most common neck pain causes are arthritis, sports injuries, and car accidents, although other things can cause trauma to the neck and result in chronic neck pain.

At Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center, our comprehensive approach works well for neck pain, as most neck pain cases require a more elaborate treatment program. Our pain management doctors may recommend a combination of minimally invasive procedures, medication, and alternative therapy like massage or physical therapy to alleviate neck pain. If you are suffering from neck pain, it is important to make an appointment with a pain management doctor at LVSPC as soon as possible, as even mild chronic neck pain can evolve into a much more significant problem over time.

Post Laminectomy Syndrome

Post laminectomy syndrome is also often referred to as failed back surgery syndrome, and refers to the continuation of pain and disability following traditional open back surgery. While the surgery may have been executed flawlessly and is not the fault of the surgeon, many patients will find that they are still in a significant amount of pain following the surgery. Another cause of post laminectomy syndrome is that the original surgery does relieve the pain but the patient suffers from a recurrent disc herniation, or scar tissue forms at the surgical site and begins to create its own nerve compression.

With our comprehensive approach toward pain management, post laminectomy syndrome or failed back surgery syndrome can be properly managed, and the patient can live with reduced pain and return to their daily activities

Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition that is characterized by low back pain that may be referred into the buttocks and legs. This pain is due to pressure put on the sciatic nerve and can be caused by disc herniation or disc bulging.

To effectively treat sciatic pain, the pain management doctors at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center will focus on relieving pressure and inflammation through the use of anti-inflammatory medications and minimally invasive procedures like epidural steroid injections.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis

characterized by a narrowing of the spinal canal, which subsequently puts pressure on the nerves surrounding the spine. Spinal stenosis may be caused by heredity, age, or overuse.

At Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center, the treatment programs for spinal stenosis may vary based on the location of the stenosis, the medical history of the patient, and the severity of symptoms. Treatments may include minimally invasive procedures, anti-inflammatory medications, and physical therapy.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy or Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) is also known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) and is characterized by pain that is burning or tingling in nature and is due to damaged nerves. This condition is difficult to diagnose and even more difficult to treat. Reflex sympathetic dystrophy usually follows fractures, sprains, and surgeries.

Our pain management doctors are experienced in treating complex regional pain syndrome and will perform a comprehensive exam to determine the most effective course of treatment for each patient. Nerve blocks are a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed at the state-of-the-art procedure center at LVSPC and have been seen to be beneficial for RSD/CRPS patients.

Cancer Pain

Cancer pain is more common than many physicians know. Cancer patients often suffer in silence in fear of complaining, or that the pain means their cancer has worsened. If left untreated, however, cancer pain can delay treatments and only results in the cancer pain patient suffering unnecessarily.

Cancer pain must be handled by experts, and the pain management doctors at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center have experience in helping cancer pain patients manage their symptoms through implantable pain medication pumps and minimally invasive procedures.

Facial Pain

facial pain

Facial pain can be extremely complicated to treat and is characterized by pain in the cheek, jaw, and around the eyes but is not necessarily associated with a headache or migraines.

After a thorough evaluation, the pain specialists at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center will use a comprehensive treatment plan to treat face pain and help patients get back to their normal daily activities.

Postherpetic Neuralgia

Postherpetic Neuralgia

Associated with the shingles virus, postherpetic neuralgia is pain that lingers after the case of shingles has cleared. Sufferers will experience pain that is burning or tingling in nature.

While most treatment plans for postherpetic neuralgia are restricted to medication, the pain specialists at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center are trained in advanced pain management techniques and can use localized injections to treat the inflamed nerves at the source.

Spasticity Syndrome

Caused by an imbalance in the signals being sent from the central nervous system, spasticity affects the control of muscles. It can cause muscles to be stiff or immobile and can cause an inability to control one’s muscles. Spasticity is often a symptom experienced by those who cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, stroke, or traumatic brain or spine injury.

Treatment for spasticity at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center may include several different treatments, including minimally invasive procedures, medications, and alternative therapies like acupuncture or physical therapy.

Central Pain Syndromes

central pain syndrome

A neurological condition that is the result of damage or dysfunction of the central nervous system, a central pain syndrome varies among individuals due to the wide scope of possible causes. Central pain syndromes can be caused by multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, tumors, stroke, or brain or spinal cord trauma.

Pain may be localized or widespread, depending on the cause and source of the central pain syndrome. At Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center, the pain management specialists will administer a careful evaluation to determine the exact cause and level of pain the patient is experiencing. Only then will a comprehensive treatment program be used for the patient and, depending on the severity and cause of the central pain syndrome, may include any combination of pain medication, minimally invasive procedures, and alternative therapies.

Peripheral Neuropathy / Diabetic Neuropathy

Peripheral neuropathy generally affects the hands or feet and can be secondary to diabetes. The pain is usually burning or tingling in nature, and usually comes on gradually, worsening with time.

There are many treatments for peripheral neuropathy at Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center, and the experienced pain management specialists will work to determine which combination of treatments will be most effective for each patient.

Spinal Compression Fractures

CONDITIONS

Compression fractures are broken vertebrae in the spine. Commonly caused by osteoporosis, trauma, or tumors, compression fractures often lead to kyphosis; a curving of the spine that causes a hunchback and slouching posture.

At Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center, we administer a number of exams and tests to understand the severity of the condition. If the patient seeks medical attention early enough, conservative therapies such as pain medication, bed rest, physical therapy, and a back brace can be used to treat his or her condition.

Opioid Dependence

CONDITIONS

Many pain conditions are treated with opioid medication; one of the most addictive drug compounds on the market. Sometimes, a patient will take opioids for years, inadvertently becoming dependent to their medication. Opioids can include Morphine, Hydromorphone, Codeine, Oxycodone, and Hydrocodone, for example.

Las Vegas Spine and Pain Center offers Suboxone treatment to combat opioid dependence. Suboxone is a combination of two drugs; buprenorphine and naloxone. These two drugs work together to block the affects of opioids and ultimately reduce a person’s dependence on opioid medication, making it easier to reduce or eliminate opioid dependence.
